Professor Deping Cao, Tongji University

Dr. Deping Cao joined the Department of Hydraulic Engineering, College of Civil Engineering at Tongji University as a Research Professor in February 2023, and was honored with the "Shanghai High-Level Overseas Talent Introduction Program" award. From 2010 to 2014, he pursued his Ph.D. in Sediment Dynamics under the supervision of Professor Chiew Yee-Meng, a renowned expert in sediment dynamics at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, and obtained his doctoral degree in Hydraulic Engineering in June 2015.

Following his Ph.D., Dr. Cao conducted postdoctoral research at the Singapore Maritime Institute and the National University of Singapore, collaborating with distinguished scholars including Professor Huang Zhenhua (a leading hydrodynamics expert from the University of Hawaii) and Professor Philip Liu Li-Fan (Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering). During this period, his research focused on cutting-edge topics such as nonlinear wave run-up, overtopping flow, and wave-turbulence interactions.

Currently, his research integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) with Smart Hydraulic Engineering, with a primary focus on:

- AI-driven coastal monitoring and ecological restoration (e.g., machine learning-based dynamic prediction of coastal erosion);

- Intelligent coupled analysis of wind-wave-current-structure-sediment interactions (e.g., deep learning-assisted extreme wave load computation).

To date, Dr. Cao has published nearly 30 papers in high-impact international journals, including 12 JCR Q1 publications (within the last five years) covering Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and AI-enhanced hydrodynamic simulations.

Beyond his publications, Dr. Cao actively engages in academic activities, including serving as:

- Guest Editor for Processes (JCR Q2) and Fluids (JCR Q3);

- Editorial Board Member for several domestic and international journals;

- Session Chair for the Sediment Scour and Morphological Changes session at the 37th International Conference on Coastal Engineering;

- Session Chair at the 21st China Ocean (Coastal) Engineering Conference (2024).
